Temple South - Donna Kwok high on Magnetron 6a © Alex Gould

Crag features

Temple South is very much the ameneable low-grade pleasure climbing venue with the greatest number of F6a graded routes in Hong Kong. Uncharacteristically long routes for the region require you to pack that 60m rope and at least 20 quick-draws.

The rock quality is excellent and curiously mineralised with magnetite (a magnetic iron ore). This is perhaps the only climbing venue in Hong Kong where climbing involves the use of naturally occurring metallic holds. Nearby to the Mother Lode sector old abandoned mine workings can be found around the mountainside.

Approach notes

As for Temple North but continue walking along the main path (after the Temple North turn off) for another five minutes. Immediately before passing below some overhead power lines, a boulder and tree can be seen on the earth bank to your left, and a trail leading up the hillside.

The path weaves uphill through trees for approximately 10 minutes to emerge on a ridgeline with good views of most sectors (including towards Temple North) at which point you are approximately half-way. The path continues across level ground then ascends up through another shorter, tree- covered section, to end at a short, rock escarpment. A few minutes up the rock escarpment and the path into the Mainstrike Wall is located to your right.

From the Mainstrike Wall a trail leads downhill to a prominent pointed rock (The Obelisk) and separate trails leading left into the lower Mainstrike Wall and across to The Mother Lode or further downhill to Tapas Crag.

Exit from all sectors (except Prospect Gate and the Noughties) is by reversing the same trail network.
