βeta: This route is incorrectly assumed to climb the dirty crack right of Grimly Fiendish. It actually only starts up this and then hand traverses left at the big break to the centre of the buttress below the capping roof before finishing up the wide roof crack with a great heelhook and mantel. It is a brilliant route. Probably E2 5C. Nick Bambers E6 which looks awesome ( l eyed it up in the 80's but too hard for me!), joins and finishes up this IE the roof finish was first climbed 30 years earlier. First ascent Owain Jones and Steve Edmondson. Both led 1985. The logbooks here refer to an ascent of the wide crack in its entirety and yes that is rubbish and not worth doing. The error is the result of the route descriptions for routes in the Lancashire guides getting abbreviated so much that the record gets lost. | βeta? | |
