Jakob Schubert is currently working on Planta de Shiva, 9b, at Villanueva del Rosario near Malaga in southern Spain. He says he's making great progress, so fingers crossed for a second ascent of this Ondra route.
The Austrian is otherwise better known as a competition climber, mostly in Lead but he is one of the few who have won in both Lead and Bouldering. Not yet in Speed though...
His best season so far was 2011 when he won seven consecutive Lead World Cups and took a Silver at the World Championships. The following year he took the Gold.
On rock he has redpointed 9b (Fight or flight), onsighted 8c (Aitzol), bouldered 8C (Bügeleisen), and flashed 8B (Nagual, Riverbed, Wrestling with an alligator).
I sat down with Jakob for a chat in Chamonix, just after the World Cup/European Championships in July. So, if you want to know more about this strong Austrian, here is a podcast.
