Following the announcement last year that sport climbing had been shortlisted for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a British-based viral campaign named Climb2020 was launched last week to raise awareness and increase the profile of sport climbing in advance of the final decision in August. The project is running in association with the British Mountaineering Council and the International Federation of Sport Climbing.
Campaign initiator George Upson told UKC:
"Getting the attention of the 130 members of the International Olympic Committee is no small task. However, we are reaching out to all climbers around the globe, which through a united and single voice will demonstrate to the IOC that climbing is perfectly positioned to become an Olympic sport."
People are invited to register support for the cause on the Climb2020 website, alongside GB Team officials and members who are at the forefront of the campaign.
Sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing, baseball/softball and karate were named as the final five sports recommended for inclusion at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games last September (UKC News Report).
