COMPETITION CLIMBING AND THE OLYMPICS
Next Sunday the BMC's National Council will make an announcement on whether or not the BMC will back the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) in its campaign to get competition climbing upgraded to the Olympics.
By some estimates there are over 2,000 UK climbers of all ages competing in climbing competitions and it is gaining momentum. Quite rightly, considering the participation in the UK, the British Mountaineering Council are now heavily involved in competitions (BMC Competitions pages). The BMC hosts national and international events, organises the BMC Youth Climbing Series, the BMC Leading Ladder Series, the British Bouldering Championships, British Lead Climbing Championships and has a climbing walls and competition officer, Rob Adie.
Climbers in the UK and the BMC Area Committees have been discussing whether to support competition climbing as an Olympic sport for the last few months. Next Sunday is decision day.
