Both. But most definetly ice at that point.
Drytooling (M8?) too hard for us, to get onto the ice smear, then 3cm to 10cm thick ice all the way down that upper wall where Jon is in the pic. Thick enough to get some stubby screws in. See also http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=133818
