Lovely pic (better than the other - there's something particularly haunting about John being just a tad out of focus).

I found it very moving to meet Pauline Syrett for the first time. She had so many uncanny similarities with her brother. His presence was very much with us that day and, as I've said time and again, John Syrett was one of those few people whose persona was so extraordinary that I feel I only last saw him about three weeks ago, rather than 38 years.

To put it another way - without I hope sounding too maudlin - I think all of us who knew him are still grieving a bit.

We always will.

I was on the same course as John Syrett at Leeds and went with him on his first ever visit to the climbing wall. We did a bit of our early climbing together at Ilkley and Almscliffe. He was just too good for me and I could rarely second his leads!
