As the first ascent of The Spade was completed there was a thunderstorm with very heavy rain. The photo was taken as the rain began to ease.
Note : I have submitted this photo on behalf of my friend Foxy, who, despite many attempts and even advice from a Forum thread, failed to get it through the system. If this one gets through I think know why and then Foxy can set up his own gallery - he has many historical classics.

Thanks for your efforts Boje! However, Lees would have been none too pleased to have seen his name spelt Jonny rather than Johnnie!! Fox.

No problem Fox - it really is a briliant photo with great atmosphere and history. Mo and I went to Bodlyn five years later in 1965 and I don't think anyone had been there since you and Johnnie. We did many new routes and I thought that after all the vegitation was cleared the crag would be a popular destination with routes of around 400 ft of HS / VS grade. It didn't work that way as nobody seemed very interested.

I only met Lees once, we had just brought bodies off Craig y Person. A press man tried to photo the bodies and Lees thumped him, his mate went to help him so I threatened to thump him as well. The press haven't changed in 40years.

Thanks for your comments OMOW - sounds like the Lees I knew. Did you see my other photo titled Mountain Rescue with my comments on the behaviour of the press ? I was involved in mountain rescue for nearly three years and we all got thoroughly pissed off with the press, who really would print any story, true or false. In the end we decided to talk to only one reporter from the Bangor (Herald ?) and it seemed to work. He sent us the odd bottle of whisky which none of us drank in those days, except when two German girl hitch hikers came by. But that's another story !
