Johnnie Lees is leading Pitch 3 during the first ascent of The Spade. The photo was taken by a fellow member of Valley MRT who was on a top rope.

Nice one Fox - I note the nailed boots, Scott carabiners and the beret. If I remember correctly Lees always wore a beret when climbing and was superstitious to the point that he kept a few spares in case one got lost. Is that how you remember it ?
You didn't mention that you actually carried a spade up the route to clear the massive vegetation - hence the name of the climb.

Yes, Lees always wore the red beret. I believe that those who led Moonlight Arret down at Harrisons, back in the forties, were entitled to wear it. Of course, Lees led it. I`m not aware of him keeping spares.
