Probably. Lost touch after a couple of routes in Yosemite in 1979. He was (I guess) 50+ then so may not be around anymore.

Come on Nomy, I don't think he's that old. I would put him at a similar age to me, born 1938, and I certainly hope he is still with us. I knew him quite well in the early sixties when he was with the MA and I was instructing in Ogwen. We only ever climbed together on two days in 1962 and I remember that we did Fang, First Slip and Cenotaph Corner.
Great photo and good to see him again.

Hope I'm wrong but I was 25 in 1979 and anyone over 35 would have seemed ancient!

Spider was a National Park warden in the Lakes in the 70s. I seem to remember he lived in Tilberthwaite, maybe.

Remember Spider and his wife Maureen well, he worked as an outdoor education instructor along with Terry Nicolls for the education dept in Edinburgh in the late 60s.

Spider left his work as a National Park Warden and moved to Africa (Kenya, I think.) As far as I know he is still alive and would be about 75 now at a guess. He was active in S.Africa also making new routes. A great bloke, along with the late Roy Brown we had some memorable times together.

Now know that Spider is 72 and living in S. Africa. He still climbs.

Dead on. I'm still in touch with Spider, who now lives in Johannesburg, and one day will fulfil my longstanding promise to climb with him in SA - better be soon, before we're both over the hill!

Correction. Spider lives near Durban not Johannesburg.

Spider visited Britain earlier this year. Met him for a pint in Leeds. He tells me he's still rock climbing but more locally now as he finds long approaches beyond his legs as, like him, they're 77 years old.

Eric lives in Durban, South Africa.

Eric passed away today. He spent the last few decades in South Africa. I spent a lot of time with him, hearing first hand stories I had read about ...Cenotaph Corner and Joe Brown.
He had a massive influence on many, many youngsters in the country.

Gerald Camp - if you see this I'd like to hear from you if you can spare the time and have sent you an email, message via UKC. I hope you see it. I've been concerned about Spider having not received his usual cheery reply to my Christmas cards.
