Route: Praying Mantis (E1 5b) Camera used: Boots 35mm Compact. Scanned colour slide. Date taken: 1st May 1966
The photo was taken by Ken Jackson who kindly granted me permission to share it here.
This was an early ascent by Sullivan and Jackson, using only a sketchy route description! Ken recalls... On the second pitch, Sullivan [the leader], miss read the description, climbing a steep shallow corner by mistake [this was the line of the then unclimbed "Direct". The corner soon became very hard and Sullivan placed a peg [his only protection], he retreated to the belay. The pair soon spotted the correct route which was completed without further problems.
Back home on Teesside, Jackson mentioned the possibility of a "Direct" to Les Brown....a few days later the pair returned to the crag and the "Direct" was climbed.
