Bob Whittacker always climbed in them, climbed with a fag in his mouth and gave you a lift to the crag on the back of his bike.

Not having a go at the climber in this article or Bob Whittaker but it could be argued that the popular bits of Brownstones (AKA Barrow Bridge Quarry - no idea where the name Brownstones comes from) were seriously damaged through years and gears of climbing in big boots.
Lovely piece of history though in that series of images. Thanks for sharing!
