Did you scare him more with a descent of curved ridge? That was my baptism in 1983 as a school boy.

He was surprisingly calm-headed, given that this was his second ever multi-pitch route (his first being the Cioch Nose on Sgurr a' Chaorachain, the previous day).
He did mention that he thought it was all over when he got to the top of the route...until he found himself down climbing Curved Ridge!
