Is that really 'wire'?

Identified as a Fisher. There is a BMC Gear report from 1970 that declared them safe as houses.

Thanks for that link. I see one of the descriptions mentions 1/4" diam. bar, which is more what your photo looks like, rather than the usual definition of 'wire'. It does look quite home made though, but as you say, no doubt as safe as houses!
