I think thats a Scleroderma - not a puffball :o)

I think it is a puffer-mushroom and it is reacting to those pants!

Yes I too think it to be of that genus, which seem to often go under the common name of 'earth ball', but having a similar mode of spore dispersion, I thought the title to be adequate for the casual observer of the photo gallery. Perhaps a specialist in the mycology of N. America could identify the actual species?
