Update - Back in North Wales for the summer of 2016. I am training for my MIA re-assessment (Mountain day). I 'm looking for experienced partners or people wanting to learn the ropes to practice with. (No fees any tuition is free as it helps me log my days as required by the MIA award).

Any partners joining me for instruction should read and understand the following notes.

I am qualified to work as a mountain leader and teach at single pitch crags in the UK. However, most of the instruction I am offering will not be covered by these qualifications. Although I have done my MIA training I have not finished the assessment. The MIA scheme makes provisions for taking friends and mock students into the hills and onto multi pitch crags before assessment with certain limitations. The following notes from the BMC & MIA clarify the situation.

Participation and risk
The below statement is taken from the British Mountaineering Council’s (BMC) website

“The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.”

That is the bottom line, however, when working as a mountain leader (paid or unpaid) a duty of care is assumed. Through training and subsequent risk analysis the mountain leader will reduce the risk as is reasonably practicable for any given situation.

(My) Insurance.

“If you are a trainee MIA or trainee MIC, resident in the UK and affiliated to the BMC or MCS (AMI member are) and you are practising for your assessment with friends / mock clients where there is no payment whatsoever involved (including payment in kind) then third party civil liability cover we get from the BMC/MCS will cover you for that. You don’t need to buy professional cover for this volunteer situation.”

My AMI membership number is 1972.

(Your) Insurance

If you are a member of the BMC or a climbing club you may have third party civil liability insurance. This does not cover injury to yourself.

My contact details are or 07973 325430
See to see what I do in the winter months.
