Forums Help Page

This page gives answers to many common problems that users have about the site, such as logging in, forgotten password, etc. If you can't find an answer to your question here, then please use the Contact Us form to send a message to the forum moderators.

Q1: I get errors when I try to register?

The most common problems when you try to register are:

  • Your web browser has cookies disabled, or you have a personal firewall (eg. ZoneAlarm) which is blocking cookies. You can read more About Cookies and how to enable them.
  • Email address is empty or too short or not correct (no such address). Try again making absolutely sure that you enter your email address correctly.
  • Your password is empty or not correct. You, or someone else, has used that email address to register already - so you need to Login as Existing User with that email address rather than trying to register.
  • Your name is empty or too short. The user name you choose must be at least 2 letters long.
  • Your chosen name is too similar to one already used by another registered user. Another user has already registered with that name, or something very similar. Please try using a different user name.

If you are still having problems using the registration, please Contact Us for further help.

Q2: I have registered. How do I activate my registration?

When you first register, you will be emailed a single click link to Activate my Registration. This is just to check that your email address is correct. Once activated, you will have full access to all parts of the site.

If you've lost your activation code then you can be emailed an Activation Code Reminder. If you don't activate your registration within 14 days, then your account will be deleted.

Q3: I have activated my registration. How do I login again?

Next time you need to login, simply go to Login as Existing User or use the form in the top-right corner of every page. If you've Forgotten your Password? then you can reset it to a new password.

When you login, a 'cookie' will be set on your computer which means that you will be automatically logged in next time you visit the site - there shouldn't be any need to keep entering your password unless you change computers, or purposefully log out. More About Cookies.

Q4: I get errors when I try to login?

The most common problems when you try to login are:

  • Your web browser has cookies disabled, or does not support cookies. You must have used a browser with cookies enabled in order to register, but your current browser has them disabled. You can read more About Cookies and how to enable them.
  • Email address is empty/too short or not correct (no such address). That address doesn't match the one that you used to register with. Try again making absolutely sure that you enter your email address correctly, or enter your chosen user name instead.
  • Your password is empty or not correct. It is important to enter the upper and lower case letters of your password correctly. If you've Forgotten your Password? then you can reset it to a new password.

If you are still having problems using the registration, please Contact Us for further help.

Q5: I have forgotten my password (or activation code)

If you've Forgotten your Password? then you can reset it to a new password. You'll be emailed a Reset Link, to confirm that your the owner of that account.

If you've recently registered but not yet activated your registration, then you can be emailed an Activation Code Reminder. If you don't activate your registration within 14 days, then your account will be deleted.

Q6: How do I change my registered user name?

There is no need to create a new account if you want to change your user name. Once you've logged in, you can change your user name to whatever you like by going to the Change User Name page. This will check if the name is available and not in use by another UKC user. User Name changes have to be verified by the moderators which happens once each day.

Q7: How do I log in from different computers, with the same user name?

If you want to use UKClimbing.com from more than one machine, for example from your home computer and your work computer, then you should register first on one of the computers using your preferred email address. Once this is established you may wish to change your password to something easier to remember, via your Change Password page. Then you can log in from your alternative computer using the new, more memorable password. You can login with your user name or email address, but make sure that you enter the email address associated with your initial account and not the email associated with your alternative machine.

There is no need to have separate user names for different computers! e.g. Joe Bloggs (at work) and Joe Bloggs (at home).

Q8: I am logged in, but I can't reply to my thread, or read old threads, or see old photos?

If you are completely sure that you are logged in as a registered user, but you can't reply to a thread you started because there is no 'reply' button, then the most likely reason is because your web browser has cached a copy of that particular web page on your computer, instead of fetching the latest version of the page. This also sometimes happens across the whole of the Forums or the Photo galleries where you are stopped from reading old threads, or seeing full size versions of photos.
To cure this problem you need to force Refresh the page so that you make your browser get a new version of the page from the server.

First of all, try reloading the web page by holding down Ctrl+F5 keys (or the Shift+F5 key, depending on your web browser). If that doesn't help, try emptying your web browser cache (look in 'Tools' or 'Preferences' depending on your browser). You could also try using a different web browser to see if that helps. The problem will always go away in the end anyway.

Q9: A thread I posted a while ago seems to have disappeared. Where has it gone?

Threads posted in Lifts and Partners, For Sale/Wanted and Lost and Found forums, are auto-deleted after 90 days without receiving replies. Threads in the Chat Room are deleted after 7 days without replies.

Q11: Can I be notified when people reply to forum threads I have posted on?

Yes, you can find out about replies to your threads at RSS Feeds Explained. There are also RSS feeds to keep you up to date with the latest UKC news items, events, articles, photos, etc.

Q12: How do I delete my User Profile?

For security reasons, there is no option to delete your own account. If you don't log on then the profile will be automatically deleted after 24 months. Please check our Privacy Policy for more information about your User Profile privacy and removal. Before you leave us though please Contact Us and let us know if there is anything we're doing wrong on the site, or problems that we could solve - we'd like you to stay!

Q13: How do I unsubscribe from your mailing list?

UKClimbing.com has an opt-in Weekly Newsletter, which users can unsubscribe from at any time. You can also choose between getting a simple text-only newsletter email (about 10Kb), or an HTML version with some graphics (about 30Kb). All you need to do is log in, and then go to the User Options page.

Q14: How do I update my email address?

If you have to a new email address, please update your UKClimbing.com account so that people can contact you through the forums, and we can send you weekly newsletters, etc. Just log in, and then go to the Change Email address page.
