Win a Petzl NAO: A new-generation head torch Winners

The answer to the question: What is the minimum and maximum light output in lumens of the Petzl NAO? is 355 lm (lumen) down to 7 lm.

Thank you to everyone who entered.

The winners are Jeremy Leong of London and William Gordon of Warminster. Jeremy and William will each receive a Petzl NAO.

In January UKClimbing.com and UKHillwalking.com reported from Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City about the launch of Petzl's new NAO head torch (Petzl Nao Report).

The Petzl NAO (pronounced 'now' from the Chinese meaning brain or intellect) features Petzl's REACTIVE LIGHTING technology that uses an integrated light sensor that allows the head torch to instantly and automatically adjust the beam pattern and light output based on conditions; you only use the light and power that you need.

The NAO is ideal for night running, hill walking, alpinism and climbing.

Maximum lumen output is a whopping 355 lm (lumen) down to 7 lm, compare that to the old Petzl Zoom's 25 lm output. In self-adjusting REACTIVE LIGHTING mode, the light adapts instantly and automatically: full power for distance vision, medium power for moving around, or low power for proximity lighting. This mode optimizes battery use and therefore increases the burn time of the headlamp to over 8 hours depending on output. You also have the option of customising light output and burn time using the OS by Petzl software to tailor the lamp to your specific needs.

The power source is a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery strapped in a small case to the back of your head. This, like the Petzl CORE, features USB charging, either using mains, a computer or your car. You can also back that up with a spare Lithium-Ion battery, or with two AAA batteries.

Win a Petzl NAO: Two Available

The NAO will be on sale in the UK early July (UK RSP will be £135.00), but Petzl and their UK distributor Lyon Outdoor have kindly provided us with two Petzl NAO's for a competition; we will also be publishing a review of the NAO at UKClimbing.com and UKHillwalking.com shortly.

To win a Petzl NAO all you have to do is answer the question in the form below.

Petzl Nao: a new-generation head torch

Petzl, leader in hands-free lighting and the UK distributor Lyon Outdoor are proud to introduce the NAO with REACTIVE LIGHTING technology, the first headlamp that automatically adjusts brightness and beam pattern with its two high power LEDs to meet users' lighting needs.

REACTIVE LIGHTING technology marks a significant leap forward in hands-free lighting, allowing users to focus on the activity at hand, as their headlamp adjusts seamlessly, instantly and imperceptibly with a range from 7 lumens to 355 lumens.

REACTIVE LIGHTING technology means the NAO will always provide
the right amount of light, reducing the need for manual adjustments and allowing users to focus on the activity at hand. As the NAO won't output too much or too little light, the headlamp uses the energy stored in its rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery as efficiently as possible, for increased burn times.

With REACTIVE LIGHTING, Petzl changes the world of hands-free lighting. It's no longer just about power, it's about using power intelligently.

More info can be found at the Petzl website.

Adapted, comfortable lighting

The shape of the beam and the power of the headlamp instantly adapt to the need (lighting for proximity, mobility, or distance vision), offering great visual comfort in a simple fashion. A minimum of manual intervention

The headlamp automatically adapts to changes (beam pattern and light output), allowing the user to remain entirely focused on the activity without worrying about lighting.

Longer burn-time

REACTIVE LIGHTING technology increases burn time, due to optimized use of the rechargeable battery. Lighting adapts to the need and therefore reduces the use of unnecessarily powerful lighting which wastes energy.

Self-adjusting lighting

The light sensor is integrated into the headlamp and oriented in the same direction as the eyes; it measures and analyses the reflected light quantity in order to instantly and automatically adapt the beam pattern (wide and/or focused) and the light output of the headlamp to the needs of the user.

For proximity lighting

The power source is a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery. You can also back that up with a spare Lithium-Ion battery, or with two AAA alkali batteries. © Petzl

When looking at an object
at a very close range, for example when consulting a map, tying a knot or setting up a tent, the beam is very wide and less powerful. Lighting adjusts automatically to the distance of the object.

For mobility

When looking straight ahead for walking, running, etc.,
the beam is wide and has medium strength in order to identify obstacles in the path.

For distance vision

When raising the head to see at a distance, for example
to look for an anchor or
a marker, the light output increases and becomes more focused.

Who It's For?

The NAO is perfect for trail running, hiking, climbing or skiing at night, and any activity where the user needs to move quickly hands free. With no need to stop and fiddle with lighting settings or levels, wearers can seamlessly light their way on the move. Just turn the NAO on and go – it does the rest.

Reactive Lighting Levels

Type of Lighting

The NAO comes pre-programmed with two reactive lighting levels with light output and burn times pre-selected to work for most activities. To get the most out of the NAO, users can download the free OS by Petzl software to customize and fine-tune the optimal brightness, burn times and beam-length for specific activities and lighting needs. Users can easily switch between profiles and modes on the fly, anywhere, at any time.
