I made my first lead at a place called Cadshaw.
The climb was easy it, was but a Diff,
But the thought of falling made me tense and stiff. I racked my gear one clip at a time,
So far I thought all is fine.
More wires and cams than I surely would need,
But my minds dire warning I intended to heed.
Take it all it may save your life,
or at the very least save you some strife. I tied on, checked and felt heavy,
about to start "Climb when ready".
And so I was off full of wonder but no real fear,
until I tried to place my first gear. A big nut a few feet from the deck,
it wouldn't go in "oh cr&p, oh fe%k".
And suddenly neatly in it sat,
I climbed on and that was that. 10m of climbing and 8 pieces of gear,
and once at the top I let out a great cheer.
As a climber I was now whole
and already thinking of my next goal. And so up a second small climb,
it felt much harder I really took my time. But thanks go to my second for his time,
stood still far so long it was almost a crime.
This is now what I do,
and maybe some day I'll climb alongside you. And I promise to not say anything in rhyme! ;)
