Having had my first crash on my bike today when some muppet decided to turn right across my path I an thinking of investing in a helmet cam ready for next time.
I have found this:
http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/dogcam-bullet-hd-camera-WIDE.html

Has anyone used one or do you have an recommendations for equipment to record my commute.

Cheers

In reply to vark: Have a look at the Veho outlet shop on ebay. Its a bit cheaper and a good bit of kit (muvi micro) and the sports kit as an extra. Not sure of your commute, but used by many for both commuting and recording Mtb rides. 1.5-2 hours of charge/recording time too.
Bikeradar has some reviews on the new kit out as well thats worth a look.

I have one of those, superb, and you see them all the time on the gadget show, top gear etc being used for filming all the little pov shots on bikes and cars.

Cheers

Never tried it, but seems to be just what you're looking for

In reply to vark:

You can get a fitting to attach it to your bike rather than the helmet. Makes for a really smooth shot.

Bit expensive over here though
 Toby_W 02 Nov 2011
In reply to vark: You do notice the extra weight at first but soon forget it. I think for commuting, I also mount it on my stem, back of the seatpost, in fact just about anywhere.

If I was buying something just to ride to work with I'd get something lighter and lower resolution.

I took it ice climbing last year and had it on my helmet. The footage was beyond belief, even more real that when I was there becuase you could sit back and look at the whole icefal in stunning full hd, really breath taking.

Hope this is all useful, stay safe on the roads.

Cheers

GoProHD is what everyone uses. I prefer the helmet mounting for MTB use, though I have also made vids with it mounted on frame of MTB and road bike (sound not as good). You can see the vids, most of which are made to describe riding where we live in Sardinia so people staying with us (we have a guesthouse, The Lemon House) can decide which rides to do, at http://www.youtube.com/user/TheLemonHouse

I don't have the "preview" back but don't think it's neccesary. BTW mount it so that you action it with your front brake hand! cheers Peter

another vote for the gopro here for 2 reasons... quality of footage and the unbelieveable mounting options that the waterproof case offers

i've used mine for mtb (helmet, bars, seatpost)
drytooling (handheld, on the axe looking down, helmet mounted)
skiing / snowbaording (helmet, chest / back strap and a custom mount)
rock / indoor climbing (helmet / head strap)
via ferrata (headband mount)

timelapse in the office (just for a laugh)

yes, it's expensive, but incredibly versitle and as a new version has been released the HD has plummeted in price

i find myself looking for more uses for it, it affects how you approach things... "ooh i could put the gopro there..."

<ok i've finished gushing now, move along, nothing to see>

That is an excellent idea, mount it on the axe shaft looking back at you. I'll give that a go in jan.

Cheers for that.

I use a DogCam HD (not the wide) for cycling to work. Works brilliantly for filming muppetry, just have to remember to turn your head towards the subject.

Great size for a helmet cam. Picture quality is OK, sound quality is not so good but it is waterproof (so far). 20 minutes = approx 1 GB. I have a 16 GB micro SD card (not included) in mine. Battery life is limited, maybe a little over 60 minutes on a full charge. Charges via USB connection only. Virtually no configuration options other than setting the time and date. File format is .MOV which can make editing a challenge unless you shell out for software.

i used the handle mount through one if the , however (it's an obvious thing, but worth pointing out) it does change the balanace of the tool a bit and it also makes it pretty well impossible to match on a small hold, but i reckon if you are hacking into ice and keeping your tools apart (ie not drytooling indoors) it'll make for some stunning footage.

there's loads more ideas i have still to try, i reckon using the chest harness or headstrap over your rucksack and then pointing the camera upwards / downwards might have potential too aslong as you don't have to chimney anything on route. and maybe wrapped round an ankle pointing downwards past your heel if you're leading

vimeo.com/22508216 GoPro on handlebar mount. Good clear evening light helps the quality of course but even with the rough roads it is not too bad.

what video setting did you use for that? lots of jello wobble when you're going over the hatchings at speed!

r4? ie 1280 by 960 mode?

can i make a suggestion then? r3 1280 by 720 50fps you loose a little bit of vertical res but the 50fps makes your resulting edited videos look much smoother (even at 30 or 25fps)

at work just now so can't link to youtube but give it a try and see. i switched recently and the differences i think are enormous and you get lucious smooth slowmos too.

Gopro have just released a new version of the HD camera with better optics and an 11MP sensor. This has had the effect of pushing the original HoproHD down in price and you can now pick one up for under $200. Get a friend in the US to buy you one and save nearly 50% compared to UK prices.

Google Sony MC1 and GoPro Hero HD. That's what we hire out to Frozen Planet and the like for all their minicam sequences and there's many good reasons for it.

In reply to rallymania: I thought that was R2 for 720 @ 60fps? Maybe my labelling is wrong. I meant to give it a go kitesurfing last week but dodgy fingers meant I got 3 poor photos!

oh i wonder if we have different models of hero ?

My favoured option at present is the Contour Roam. Cycling with the GoPro on top of my head every morning will make me look more ridiculous than is necessary
.
Anyone on here used the Contour cameras?
