Has anyone got any advice on Bouldering at St bees head. Is it worth the trip in cold conditions? It looks dry this wkend but only just above freezing. Being on the coast it is slightly warmer and the sun should be shining, will this make much of a difference? also any other suggestions of where to boulder in the cold this wkend coming would be welcome.

cheers Rich .

St. Bees would certainly be an excellent choice if that forecast holds.

St Bees catches all the afternoon sun going, so have a lie in and a cooked breakfast then enjoy.

The only issue is you may find the wave cut platform very slippery. Pavement crampons can help.

Stay for sunset, it can be stunning.

If it's fully dry it will be good, but the sandstone is pretty fragile if it's at all damp so I'd be cautious, plus as others say the platform between Apiary wall and Fishermans Steps areas is pretty gnarly if its wet. Carrock Fell is a more reliable bet, as it rewards cold weather with excellent friction and isn't snappy. It gets the morning sun and is a superb winter venue provided you wrap up warm. If you're out West, Eskdale granite is also great in winter, just don't try driving over Wrynose/Hardknott passes to get to it on an icy forecast.

If it's dry Bees will probably be decent. We are likely off to an early start at Carrock fell given the low temps and morning sun it gets.

Depending which areas you go to at St.Bees though you may have to be mindful of ride times.
