I wasn't a Mod but I did like a lot of The Jam's songs when they were really firing on all that youthful energy. As a keen potholer you might be able to guess which track was often on my lips as we were heading up the fells and down the caves. I read his autobiography a few years ago ('That's Entertainment') which was very good throwing some light on the breakup in 1982. He became a carpenter would you believe?

Saw them at least a dozen times in my youth. The songs didn't lend themselves to solo noodling obviously but I always thought Buckler and Foxton were great, underrated musicians - nowhere to hide in a three-piece
