His name has cropped up in things I've been reading a couple of times recently but I've never read any of his books. Which one should I start with?

I don't think he published many books (& some of those were posthumous). Personally, I enjoyed Wildwood more than Waterlog.

I have it as an audiobook - it works well in that format, I find biographical books fit the format, whereas I struggle to keep the focus needed for fiction and never like it for factual books that require pausing to follow footnotes and other sources.
