I'm currently rereading Neal Ascherson's 2002 book Stone Voices. For those who don't know it, it's a fascinating exploration of what Scotland is - what is is, what being Scottish means, what the country's history is, where it came from, how it came to be what it is.
However, it's very much a piece of its time - published shortly after the establishment of the Scottish Parliament, when Labour was the dominant political party and the Tories nowhere to be seen north of the border. And of course, much has happened since then - the decline of Labour and the rise of the SNP, the maturing of the parliament, and Brexit.
Does anyone know of anything similar to Stone Voices written more recently which reflect on the state of Scotland and Scottishness in the 21st century, or authors working in a similar vein? Sadly, Ascherson is probably too old to take on the task now.
