Does anybody out there know if Floyd were in the habbit of placing subliminal messages/voices in some of there songs? i know that most of their stuf is normal and some is just 'out there' and physhodelic, but certain songs (chiefly 'signs of life' from momentary lapse of reason) seam to be more than just odd.

just cos i'm paranoid.....

In reply to Jonathan Booth: there are messages in some of it, famously they put an ironic piss take of the sumbiminal message in one of the older tracks, cant remember which though. FLOYD RULES!!!

In reply to Jonathan Booth:
your paranoid - that stuff is an urban myth - if you play anything backwards for long enough you`re bound to hear something !
In reply to Jonathan Booth:

All albums after The Wall have subliminal messages saying 'Roger Waters is a Dick, David Gilmour is God, this album is actually very good, tell your friends'

In reply to octopus: like "turn that bloody shit off won't you!"

In reply to Jonathan Booth: there is definatly a backwards or hidden message in one of the pre 85 tracks, its a poke at subliminal messages.

In reply to Am Fear Liath Mor: walters was the spirit of pink floyd gilmor was the rythm

In reply to tonanf: I have been told (although I've never experienced it myself) that if you spin the end of 'Several Species of Small Furry animals . . .' backwards you hear someone saying, 'This is very avant garde, isn't it?'

In reply to Jonathan Booth:

There's some backward speaking on Empty Spaces from The Wall. I actually took the trouble to play the track backwards once and it really wasn't very interesting. Something about sending in your answer to "Old Pink".

And here it is, from the wonderous wikipedia "...congratulations. You've just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont"

who's this Walters then?....if WATERS is the spirit - it's gin!...He's been a miserable git since the late 70's and didn't do "the gig" for Live8 any favours either ( never could sing!) Gilmour isn't the rythm..he's not even the rhythm..he's the essence of post Barratt Floyd.

In reply to ampfryer: Their subliminal messages are much more subtle than backwards voice recordings.

15 years ago when I would take the odd tab of acid we were sitting around listening to Wish You Were Here and I had one of those trippy "revelation" moments. The original LP of Wish You were Here came with a set of postcards inside. My revelation moment was when I realised that Pink Floyd had recorded their music in a way where they "knew" how it would sound to you when you were tripping and when you listened to it when tripping you would find out that they knew how to record it in that way. I had a hallucination where I could see mini postcards flying out from the music towards me with "wish you were here" written on it meaning that they were inviting me to experience their music as it was intended as you would only be sent the postcards in your head and the invitation to join in the experience that Pink Floyds music was designed for if you were tripping! So to me the message was subliminal as it was hidden from you when you weren't tripping.

The whole climax of Wish You Were Here's chorus, the postcards in the LP, the intensity of Pink Floyd's music whilst on acid and the imagery of postcards in my head asking me to join them was quite overwhelming!

A load of old drug induced bollox I know but a very intense experience nontheless and the only acid revelation moment that I still remember and didn't forget 2 seconds after it happened. You must remember that feeling "I've got it - I have the answer to everything, the meaning of life and the universe -it's it's - oh bugger I've forgotten."

There is nothing quite so amazing as listening to the Floyd on acid.

..Scary!.....scary people!

Total bollox...they just play good music...

In reply to ampfryer: It ain't bollox. As a couple of people above have said, just at the end of the introduction to "Empty Spaces" on The Wall it does say "Congratulations you have found the secret message. Send your answer to Old Pink at the Chalfont mental home. I've listened to it more than once and wasn't out of my tree. In fact I've just checked and you can hear it perfectly clearly on the CD version - it starts 1 minute and 13 seconds into track 8.

Dunno about any others though.

In reply to AdrianC:
The "messages" are indeed there. It was the Floyd responding in their own "humerous" way to some press saying that they were perverting youth by subliminal messages in their records. The bollox I was referring to is the "drop acid -see the light" guff.

In reply to John2:

You slow it down, not reverse it, to get Waters saying 'Bring back my guitar', 'That was pretty avant-garde, wasn't it?' etc. Hardly hidden messages though.

Seconded, though mine was a rather less revelatory hallucination involving an albatross and my Edinburgh New Town window, second side of Relics.

I once spent around 6 hours repeatedly listening to the version of Astronomy Domine on Ummagumma after doing 3 tabs. For some reason, all of us in the room were quite convinced that the universe was pretty much rotating around this one track.

Fortunately, some straight geezer turned up and took us out driving in the mountains at about 3am. Things improved. Probably not for the driver, though.
