YAY!!! It's '93 again!!!

Just got my copy of

Levelling the land & the Levellers (3rd album)

They're ace!!!

2 of those albums I had on tape but never got round to replacing on cd. Found them for a good price on amazon cheap section.

anybody else into them?

to be honest they could do with some wailing pinch harmonic filled, wah wah drenched solos!

In reply to Jon Jones:

Saw them on tour last month at Beachcomber. they were bloody fabulous.

I can also thoroughly recommend their support act Damien Dempsey (think sweary irish angst). I have the album if anyone fancies a listen.

well, maybe not as much as they used to - they do keep doing acoustic sets

In reply to toad:

didn't actually realise they were still going.

I got into other music after the 3rd album.

In reply to Jon Jones: Probably didn't miss agreat deal. I first saw them supporting New Model Army and missed half the set, cos it wasn't cool to watch the support. saw them at various festivals and things over the years, but the turning point was at Sheffield Arena with Dredzone supporting. Thought then that arenas weren't really their thing, but realised that they were sounding very samey. I'd seen a lot of levellers type folk/punk/crusty bands and realised that what gave it the edge was being in a tent with 500 other people and that sitting in an ice rink with x000 wasn't the same.

However when they started doing stripped down acoustic sets (i think after their label dumped them?) they started showing up at the smaller festis I was going to and they still had it. Saw them last year at Rock City - perversely I'd gone for the support (seth Lakeman) but was really impressed to see them go for it. I was really surprised that a lot of the audience were young kids in Engerland shirts - the only dreds I saw were on stage.

In reply to Jon Jones:

Woohoo, love the levellers. Saw them when I was 13 and crowd surfed from the very back to the stage! BRILLIANT!

Can you post a link to the cheap section where you got them?

OP Jon Jones 16 May 2006
In reply to Castleman:

Just go on amazon, search for them and you can buy 2nd hand (were £7 each)

Oooooo BAGPIPE SOLO!!!! (the end of Julie)

In reply to Jon Jones:

They played my hall of residences Fresher Ball about 3 days into my university "studies".

That was a good start.

In reply to Jon Jones:

Yeah! Levellers rock! I saw them about a month ago at the Junction in Cambridge. Used to be really into them when I was younger. It was like being 14 all over again!
 Katy Nelson 16 May 2006
In reply to Jon Jones:
yeah for sure! theyre touring at the moment- liverpool 18th may, Middlewich 18th June and loads of others round the country,
Enjoy!
 toad 16 May 2006
In reply to Katy Nelson: Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival? I used to take my boat to that one - very mellow. I think the only dodgy dog on a string there was mine. regretably I've a prior engagement wwith the Oyster Band in Leicester

In reply to Jon Jones: I absolutely loved them as a teenager! (well, still do now, really). I remember as a fresher at Lancaster being overjoyed at finding other people who liked walking and climbing and the Levellers! Happy days indeed...

Fantastic. First band I ever saw, then saw them again and again and again. Never as good as New Model Army though. Although I can't understand why they were ever compared despite having the same traveller type crowd following them.

Last time I saw them in the Pirate in Falmouth, me and a friend ended up falling asleep under a bridge and getting money thrown at us. Crusty rock and roll indeed.

Great band!

nice to hear there are some NMA fans still around too, i always enjoy 125mph when heading up north, or green and grey driving in to langdale, or vagabonds or i love the world, aaaargh thats it, off too listen again

always prefered the more folky levellers stuff, like ballad of robbie jones etc, went off them when they tried to 'sell out'

Nice I always used to listen to Green and Grey going down the A66 to Keswick

They're still doing good gigs and good albums I'm glad to say.

NMA that is. I don't reckon Levellers albums are up to much now

I always associate Green and Grey with the Skipton - Bradford road (but NOT Bradford to Skipton), it seems to fit the journey well

I used to really like them - the music is ace, but the politics put me off them a little.

In reply to Jon Jones: My eldest son's first live gig was Levellers at Warwick Uni a couple of years back. I think he now gets the difference between a CD, and LIVE music!
Leastways, Dad's Taxi seems to get called out to a lot of gigs nowadays...

In reply to Lawman: I always thought the politics were naive, rather than unpleasant. Mostly songs about social injustice and the casual indifference of authority (I could probably guess which songs put your back up) but mixed in with songs about life on the road, which glazed over the rather unpleasant reality of drugs, std's and living in a bus by a landfill in Telford.

They did a 'rock' tour last summer and this summer they're concentrating on 'acoustic' sets.

Best place for a gig ever!

In reply to Jon Jones: They still do a mean live set too - you're guaranteed a good night out. Ah, those happy hippy days of the early 90s.....

Crikey, my first gig!
 JamieAyres 26 May 2006
In reply to Jon Jones:

my older brother was their lighting designer and engineer. Went on all the tours. He says they're not bad. Don't think I've ever heard a Levellers track myself, but judging from the comments from some of you I think I'll have to rectify that situation.

Which is the best album to get then?
 Rjukan 01 Jun 2006
In reply to Jon Jones:
If anyones interested the Levellers run a big festival called beautiful days down in Escot Park really good music and filled with really cool people!
david the bear 03 Jun 2006
In reply to Rjukan: And damned good it is too. The Levellers remain political animals, which is great in this era of pop pap. Battle of the Beanfield, what could be more political than that? What happened to the fighting years? Why do we just roll over now and play dead?
