Although the quartet was formed in 2011 they were unknown to me until this week, when they played for the Kendal Midday Concert Club. Since they were formed they have lost two of the original players, but now include cellist Leo Melvin and first violin Katie Stillman.
The programme was all Schubert, with the main offering being the Death and the Maiden quartet. It is hard to imagine that highly dramatic piece being played with more verve, led from the front by Canadian Katie Stillman, who plays like a force of nature. The first four bars had a galvanising effect on the audience, with the instantly double forte instruction being applied to the full. It reminded me of the opening of Beethoven’s fifth, with its shocking force. But there were also several beautifully rendered tender moments. Altogether a memorable performance enjoyed hugely by a packed audience. I for one will be on the lookout for further opportunities to hear this outstanding group of musical talent.
