They were another quasi-famous band from Leeds in about 15-20 years ago.

No Primal Scream from all accounts...........

OP CJD 23 Feb 2007
In reply to Simon22:

iirc Wedding Present were pure Leeds indie, just pre-britpop and shoegazing and stuff.

I know I should burn myself to death with a lighter!!

I wasn't as bad as some lads from Boston Spa Comp who suddenly started talking in a Manc accent circa 1989! WTF was all that about?!

i download a coule of movies a week and maybe 90mins of music and haven't had a problem.

generally you can tell if something is a virus cos it is 23k or similar whilst the proper file is 5Mb+

Oh yes, I remember the pink fleece boy having some strange musical tastes.

BTW - did he ever tell you about the time on his 18th he got kidnapped, stripped of his clothes and dumped in Boston Spa centre?

 marie 23 Feb 2007
In reply to Tobias at Home: I've only used it for music (and one or two TV clips). It's usually very good, but recently I've had a few problems and I'm not sure if it's Limewire or me :oS

he *has* told me some rather strange stories about those times... the only things I really remember, cos we were at a different school and he'd only just moved in with us, were him getting suspended a few times. d'oh.
Simon22 23 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD:

He had some crazy mates alright, not bad lads but just a bit mental! It used to amaze me how someone so clued up and into his education knocked around with them.

Mind you that pink fleece should have been a sign of madness.......
OP CJD 23 Feb 2007
In reply to Simon22:

that pink fleece was just, er, ambitious. bless 'im. He's just got back in touch with his mate bob from school, who I had the world's most immense crush on. guffaw! oh to be 16 again, ha ha!

Bob eh, you could have chosen worse of his mates to have a crush on!

Did you ever meet Danny Parkin?
OP CJD 23 Feb 2007
In reply to Simon22:

Danny Parkin, rings a bell, but I can't think what he looked like. I remember Chris Bunyan, and Bob, and John Middleton, oh and Alex (was his surname Scott? I fancied him too! he came to see Suede with my friends and I and ended up snogging one of my friends, about which I was most cross!) and I think that's it. Why do I have a feeling that Danny Parkin was one of the mates my mum wouldn't have liked? ohhh, and Adam Baum, whose futon I still sleep on (by some curious twist of fate)

Simon22 23 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD:

Danny Parkin was so camp he'd make Graham Norton look butch, curly hair in a centre parting.........yeah I know.

I remember Chris, Bob (saw him last year in the Bay Horse in Clifford, top geezer) and Scotty.

There was always a rumour about Adam Baum, he was sort of quite happy with himself.........
OP CJD 23 Feb 2007
In reply to Simon22:

what, about Adam being gay? my bro was living with my dad and stepmum when he started hanging out with Adam, and they were convinced that my bro was gay on that basis...

lol

I think F had kind of lost touch with Bob but then some mutual friend of my stepmother's bumped into bob somewhere down south...

oh how small this world is...

Simon22 23 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD:

About Adam, it was that he wouldn't be shy in the mens showers..........

OP CJD 23 Feb 2007
In reply to Simon22:

ah... oops. was that a deliberate thing? there was a lad at my school, also called adam as it happens, who apparently inadvertently got a bit overexcited at around that age when lads are less able to control these things... it kind of haunted him for the rest of his school years.

Simon22 23 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD:

Aye, there was at my school and all, lad named Lee. Poor bastard.

Anyway back to Adam I'll put it another way, he was appatently happy wearing swimning trunks on the beach.... comprende?

The Wedding Present are sadly ignored in the 'best bands' lists that crop up regularly IMHO...

Also, I'm sure you would like Cinerama CJD; it was David Gedges band when he shut down the Wedding Present - less spiky and more poppy.

WP have reformed recently when John Peel died and recorded a new album that's in between their classic sound and that of Cinerama.

Class!
reminds me of my stoodent days.

You've never mentioned this before
It seems I'm always the last to know
And do I have to guess how you're going to feel each day
You never have a word to say
You should have told me
I don't understand why you didn't tell me

Surely you must know I hate what I'm doing
I don't want to upset you but it's yourself you're foo
The last thing I need is part twelve of the row
But just why are you being so reasonable now?

I don't dare answer the phone
And when you call I still pretend that I'm not home
I don't want to see you anymore
Oh love, it's just not me I'm thinking of
No one can change that much in three days
It's not yours to take back?

Surely you must know I hate what I'm doing
I don't want to upset you but it's yourself you're fooling
The last thing I need is part twelve of the row
But just why are you being so reasonable now?

How can you do this to me
How can you do this to me
How can you do this to me
How can you do this to me

Hey. Yes. Wedding Present rocked. As did the Blue Aeroplanes and early Sugar Cubes.

I bought my flatmate the reissued Wedding Present album for Christmas last year, he was a bigger fan than I. He didn't bat an eyelid. Philistine.

I'm going to put it on now actually. It's probably gathering dust in his collection.

sugarcubes, good call.

the only sugarcubes I have is on vinyl, boo, as I don't have a turntable at the moment.

The Sugar Cubes were pretty good too, but I've not got alot of their stuff.

 Burns 24 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD:

The Wedding Present used to rehearse at Riverside Studios in Ossett, where we used to "rehearse". When they stopped playing, we used to (rather childishly) play their music back to them.

We were liked.
 tommyzero 24 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD (and marie): RE sugarcubes.

So you must like Arcade Fire then?

And if you ever got into shoegazing you must check out Amusement Parks On Fire. It's not as great as the first time around but it's still pretty good stuff.

Aparently MBV are recording a new album and there is a wave of Japanese shoegaze bands at the moment but I've yet to be able to track any music down on them.

I think I might have one or two sugarcubes songs as mp3 files somewhere. See if I can dig them out and send them.. or there is always iTunes.
 tommyzero 24 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD:

Oh and if you've never heard of them. Blonde redhead have some tracks which are like some weird Japanese version of the bjork-sugarcubes type of tracks.

I love blonde redhead. Some of it is quite angular and driven guitar songs (it draws Sonic Youth comparisons). But some of it is melodic and gentle.

Start with the song 'Anticipation'.

12. One per month. 7" singles, the b-side was always a cover of some classic (Elvis etc). The record still stands. 1993 I think it was.

Oh that's just not the same as having to ring your record shop the week before to make sure they'll put a copy aside for you, and going out at lunchtime to buy the 7", failing to concentrate on your work all afternoon cos all you want to do is get home and spin it on your Dansette, and all you can do is look at the sleeve, read all the credits, maybe look at the vinyl, see if there's a message in the runout groove...

Tell that to today's iPod generation, they'll not believe you

Cheeky.

Bridewell Taxis, bloody hell, that is a blast from the past. I saw them, and the Kitchens of Distinction down the Duchess years ago. I seem to recall the Hamsters played the next night along with Katie Jane

My bro's band supported the Wedding Present at Leeds Poly in about 92. I think they played 2 numbers before being booed off.

I am now off to dust down my CuD albums....

One of the advantages of having a stepson who was a teenager in the 80s was that I got to listen to bands like The Weddding Present, Soup Dragons, Pastels, Talulah Gosh, My Bloody Valentine, House of Love etc. 'George Best' was a great album (partic like My Favourite Dress).

In reply to John Rushby: fear not - the Bridewell`s are touring again soon.

p.s. George Best is a class album.
