I don't know why I've never taken much notice before of the short films categories at the Oscars/Baftas etc. but this year someone recommended the fabulous Adam and Dog to me, which was up for the Oscar for Best Animated Short:

If you have 15 minutes to spare, do give it a watch. It's beautiful animation and lovely, nuanced storytelling.

It was beaten by Paperman:

which is also charming although I don't rate it as highly, personally. This has started me on something of a journey through the lists of past winners and nominees, and while I can't find all the films online, there are some gems. The quirky The Lost Thing is also worth a view:

youtube.com/watch?v=38GTVR3wglo& (15 mins)

but the best I've found so far is JoJo in the Stars which won the Bafta for best animated short in 2004:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irm6E_UbaZA&wide=1 (13 mins)

I just wanted to share these because they're fab - especially 1 and 4 - and I'd love any more recommendations for short films (they don't necessarily have to animated tbh) available online or to download. Ta!

Can't beat a bit of Jan Svankmayer (I can't find my favourite one of the girl spying on her parents eating coal, so this 2-minuter'll have to do -- it's excellent, too).

In reply to cragtyke: Well that made me chuckle! The animation wasn't particularly animated mind....
OP Alyson 09 Mar 2013
In reply to psaunders: Thank you! Rain Town is lovely - right up my street. Just about to watch the second one.

Imaginative, intelligent and sad. I love the ways in which these films tell stories successfully without using dialogue.

Well that was... slightly disturbing! Perhaps I'd need to see the whole thing to fully appreciate it.
In reply to Alyson: Day and Night, very clever, and funny!

In reply to Dafydd Llywelyn: That's superb, thank you! I've also just watched Fresh Guacamole by PES - at 1 min 41 seconds it's the shortest film to ever be nominated for an oscar.

They used to show this stuff regularly on BBC2 on Wednesday evenings and/or C4 randomly on Sunday daytimes.

There's an NFB compilation which is well worth getting.

Leeds International Film Festival has a great World Animated Shorts competition. Over a few nights they show a load of great short films from the past year and the audience chooses the winner.

I've seen some great films there over the years, things like Skhizein vimeo.com/36824575 about a man hit by a meteorite who has to adapt to living 91cm from himself.

I'll hunt some more out.. Too many to remember!

I don't know anyone who has seen this and doesn't love it

Thanks for this and the others. The first link you posted reminded me of the Far Side cartoons - something about the style of the characters perhaps. Very entertaining!

In reply to Alyson:

The Big Snit rewards multiple viewings, at first it's just "funny" but there is actually quite a bit of depth to it

Ditto Le Chateau de Sable, first you just get impressed with the insanely tricky stop-motion animation and then it gets you thinking about the transience of existence and whatnot.

And although Paradise goes on a bit and is a bit heavy-handed, it is a nice message regarding "be happy with who you are"

I couldn't watch it on that link but I found it on vimeo. Wow, that's a bit dark!
OP Alyson 11 Mar 2013
In reply to Blue Straggler: The stop motion animation is brilliant - the shifting sand dunes from the wind possibly even more so than the little characters. And yes, it wouldn't be the first civilisation to be swallowed back up by a desert!

I'm not doing very well finding links that work! Try this one instead if you have 5 mins.

Bottle is a beautiful stop motion short: http://www.shortoftheweek.com/2010/12/19/bottle/

John Lewis tried a similar thing for their Christmas advert this year..

That one is fantastic! It's great to see the huge diversity of styles and techniques of animation as this thread progresses. I feel quite inspired actually <eyes up playdough>

I bet some cretin posts a clip of Ukrainian "sand artist" Kseniya Simonova due to a failure to understand what "animation" means.

(Simonova's work was amazing, by the way. But it's not animation)
