Any recommendations?

My wife & I have enjoyed watching some old docs about early expeditions to K2 and Everest, by Bonnington, Scott, Whillans & Haston etc.

Also watched some on the K2 disaster & others based on the events in Into Thin Air.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Berghaus' film of Leo Houlding in Greenland is pretty good - youtube.com/watch?v=cBSnwpcYRqA&

Check out the TVmountain channel on YouTube. Lots of films of Alpine routes eg N. Face of Matterhorn... shot with go pro and zero chat to the camera! Just euro (mostly) alpinists doing their thing.

Like slow TV for climbers.

Thanks. Will give it a shot.

One of the appealing aspects of the older footage was the genuineness of the people involved, the general unpretentiousness of it, an era before social media and slick branding.

I'll see how this one goes!

We have watched one 'modern' ascent account by Turkish alpinist, Tunc Findik: even though nothing dramatic happened I liked his down to earth style

Everest 1984, the White Limbo doco about the Australian expedition. Excellent stuff.

The attitudes (TM-S's dress shirt with a hand painted yin-yang on the back, lots of zinc), the accents and the audacity make it a relic of good alpinism and a rare chance to see amazing climbing as it happened (the only alpine-style FA on the peak, as far as I know only once repeated).

Great stuff, I'll be keen to give it a viewing. It's refreshing I find to see this older stuff that has it's own superlatives and ways about, but doesn't have the slick commercialism of what we see today. White Limbo was made by a major Australian TV network yet there's very little branding, no brooding bullshit, no drones,  just good old DIY expeditioning. Vegetarians too.

That's one we've watched. It's great.
