Someone has burned down the first hut on Corsica's GR20

It should still be okay to camp and the authorities are going to try to get a temporary hut of some sort set up. It sounds as if there is a bitter dispute going on over a new management system for the huts.

Thanks for the post. We're going over for this one this year so we'll keep an eye on developments.

We're going in June and are camping so shouldn't be affected, but I guess the worry is wondering what the arsonists will do next. Reading the Corsican media, it sounds as if the recent reallocation of responsibility for running the huts has led to some very bitter feelings among those who used to have charge of them.

Seems to be the Corsican way of doing things. A lot of organised crime in Corsica mixed up with the independence movement and the different villages having their own gangs.

The last time we were there there were three murders in a week, two on one morning. One was a defence lawyer who represented one group of thugs the other a well known local gangster from another village/family. We were staying in Bastia and heard shots fired one night. It was all very edgy but the criminals keep it amongst themselves.

Probably worthwhile being aware of all thus but not a cause for concern. Certainly it wouldn't stop me going back to what is a very beautiful island.

We are Corsica regulars and I recall on one visit the house of a general of the French army being blown up.  Apparently, this had little to do with the well-documented enmity that exists between Corsican separatists and their French overlords. Instead, it was a matter of an objection to the design and, in particular, the scale of the house. To maximise the pain on the part of the offending resident, the terrorists waited until the house had been expensively completed before blowing it to smithereens. It is no coincidence that Corsica is the only island in the Western Mediterranean to have escaped the curse of the high-rise tourist development.

It'll probably be on a T shirt soon. There seems to be a certain pride in that sort of thing .
