Dear UKCers,

I'm hoping the collective knowledge of people on this forum might be able to help me out a little.

I've been asked to run an abseil on saturday at Millers Dale Viaduct, having never been there before i've done as much research as possible on the internet with regard to parking, access, route to the viaduct etc. However, i was just wanting to enquire as to what equipment (if any) ie bolts, there were on the Viaduct to set up the abseil, and how high it is / what length of rope is needed.

Mucos gracias

Tim

In reply to birdman: Easy parking. Free. Short walk in. Short abseil. No bolts i don't think, but ease of rigging around posts set up for the purpose. It's very popular

In reply to birdman: Do you have a licence or are you running it under somebody elses? C-:

Think you may need permission from someone or other to run an abseil here.

I would do a bit more research first rather than just turning up and risk being dis appointed.

I know World Challenge at Buxton use it - maybe give them a ring and pick their brains?

There are 2 parts of the bridge that are tested for abseiling use: one over the land, one over the water. Both are marked. If there's another group there you may not have a choice though.

If you don't already have one, you won't have time to get an abseil licence by tomorrow (it's specifically for Millersdale Bridge), so I suggest you have a back up plan.

By the way, do check that your insurance allows you to abseil off manmade structures as many just seem to cover rock.

Look out for amazing crinoids on the limestone steps!

Yes i have managed to sort out a liscence for my unit to use the bridge. As it's a military group, part of the extensive authorisation to enable us to conduct adventurous training, requires that all land both private and public, be cleared (ie permission sought to use the land).

Thanks for your advise regarding the access/licence and also the insurance, but again its covered under military insurance as all those taking part are on duty.
