Was wondering if anybody could advise. Have older versions of both Arrampicare a Cala Gonone (2009) and Pietra di Luna (4th Edition) but there are now new versions of both. 2010 and 2011 respectively. My question really is, is there much new stuff in the 2010 Cala Gonone book or in the 2011 Sardinia book (in the Cala Gonone area), and should I bother buying either (expensive).

I climb around 5c/6a at a push.

Thanks

Tom

In reply to Tom Hutton: Hi Tom, the main thing to know about the "Arrampicare a Cala Gonone " guides is that the author doesn't check the routes personally, the info is recycled from other sources, with the following pros and cons:-
1. Pro: new versions come out much more often than Pietra di Luna (2002 then 2011) and contain info from the various news web sites that otherwise you may struggle to access
2. Con: if the info is incorrect eg grades the "Arrampicare a Cala Gonone " will not pick this up

The other pro of AACG is that it includes some of the MP routes eg the routes at Surtana which otherwise you have to have the 4th edition of PDL to find, it may well also be updated for new easy MP routes at eg Monte Oddeu.

In general in the last few years Cala Gonone and Isili have been the areas of Sardinia with least new development, all the other areas SW, Ogliastra and N have seen the number of crags and routes double from the 2002 edition of PDL. You should be fine with your 2009 guide, I would have thought.

Watch the bolts by the sea is one new thing you do need to know, though

In reply to Peter Herold:

Thanks Peter, and seriously interesting stuff re the bolt failures - that one went by without me noticing at all. Just to add a bit of complication to the issue, think we'd like to try a crag or 2 out of Cala Gonone on this trip - where would recommend? Top end 5c/6a? And would I need the new book for it?

Hope things are good there. If we're in your part, we'll give you a shout

Tom
