In reply to dixiechick:
just back from slovenia for 10 days.
re climbing there is sport climbing and alpine routes (1..X)
and walking/via ferratta
Sport-
limestone cliffs all over the counrey mosl;ty very easy access, well bolted and i found quite hard for the grade. Plenty of routes from 4a..8c A few major crags (OSP area near the coast and a few others) Mainly sinlge pitch with good loweroffs, some multi pitch, the guide tells you all about it. It lists 70+ crags
Guidebook available here (20 quid) or over there for 5900 tolars (18 quid) from tourist info and gear shops all over the place. It has slovenian, english and German intro secctions and good topos, though the maps are a bit naff sometimes.
Alpine Routes: there are tons in the mountains which are massive limestone cliffs. All grades. We couldnt find a guidebook we could understand. If i went back id try and do some of theses. Full on trad (and use quite a few pegs for pro- people we met all carried hammers and 5 ot 6 pegs wires and full set of friends). So much rock so many routes ....
Walking and Via ferratta is great out there, quite a few guidebooks (Mountaineering in Slovenia is obvious with 45+ days out) The via Ferratta routes are in excellent condition and quite easy. Routes from short couple of hour stroll to 3 day hikes beytween huts.
Good maps available out there 1:50,000 in shops and huts. Easy to make own arrangements. The hills are are uptp 2800m
so not too high (easily doable in a day despite the guidebook advice).
Weather is CHANGEABLE we had very hot + LOTS + LOTS of rain, unusual they said. It snowed on top of triglav last week when we did it. beware of summer storms ! We had good/bad alternate days. Good forecasts hard to get hold of, Tourist info only have vert general rubbish ones. Links on Summitpost.org to trigalev weather station and good 5 day forcast if you can find a net connection (ask in tourist info- i used the tourist info laptop at LJUB airport)
Campsites clean tidy and pricey- we paid upto 7 quid pppn, but you get lots for your money- no basic field and bog type sites. No camping in then parks (unless yu owna motorhome in which case it appears you can ignore all the signs and rules) good basic site at Mostrana foot of Vrata valley not far fom Kranski gora and cheaper than the spik hotel (about 1/2 price!). You can get resealable gas cannisters 'reasonably' easily - eg Interstport in Kranski Gore and lots of other places.
public transport very good but we had a car (from budget via arguscarhire.com) about 20 quid a day. diesel is cheap and it made our life very easy. Its a small coumtry and we drove around most of it, can gte to the co`ast in a few hours from the hills if its raining. Maps come with hire cars and from tourist info.
they say August will be really really busy but its not as bad as all that.
Go to Logarska Dolina (on Austrian border north or kranj, great hills, less peopele
many people speak english (and italian/geman etc). you can spend Euros at some places but ou wont get as good a deal as paying in Tolar.
shold keep you busy for a good while.....
