Does anyone know if there are rock climbing guidebooks to either of these areas that are still in print?

Cheers,

C

Might still be available in local shops, as it appears the first printing might be sold out?

The specific guides to the Harz regions are still available (vk.kletterbibel.de/), but the general guide Klettern im Norden is completely sold out, at least everywhere I've tried in and around Hamburg and online. There is a nice bouldering guide to the Harz http://www.harzblock.de/.

You can print off topos for Ith from the website listed above.

Hi mate,
I sent the Harz guide (albeit a copy) to a guy on here called Gary in Germany (hope it was him!). Not too sure if it arrived, but he might copy it for you?

Best place, I think, with different grades is just down from the dam. Park next to the dam/shop/resturant and walk down the hill. You will see a large expanse of rock on the left hand side and there will be a trail down to it.

Good climbing and normally in the sun. A lot of the routes are in the forest itself so you have to find them first! If you are there for a while, join the local DAV

http://www.alpenverein.de/

Had great times with them using their huts, meeting people and going on trips. Good thing about the Harz is also langlaufing in winter. Lovely place and very historical as well as the West, East border guards were stationed there.

Viel spass!

I've also just heard that a lot of the trees on the East side of the Okertal were blown down, making access to the areas a lot easier.

You will enjoy your time there. I spent a week on the way through to France after visiting relatives in Hildesheim and really enjoyed the climbing I did there.

The only area I climbed at was Luerdissen at Ith. It has a nice grassed climbers camping area with limestone butresses on a pretty treed hillside only a short walk away.

I'd gladly spend 18 months there!

In reply to smyth7: The Okertal is one of my all-time favourite European climbing spots, definitely worth a visit IMHO.

Just out interest, where are you based? I'm in Hamburg at the minute, a bit too far to get to Ith and the Harz regularly.

In reply to CWB: We've got two german guides one for the Western Harz and one for the Eastern Harz. Could dig out a link if you wish. I have been there but the weather was terrible; which is apparently quite usual, it is hilly and full of trees. The climbing looks very good, quite like gritstone. We stayed in a really nice hut in a campsite near the village where they make shikker feirstein (sp??). The towns such as wernigerode are really nice.

I was at Fallinbostel for two and a half years and found the Klettern im Norden guide at the climbing wall that is in a gym in Hannover, the other wall in Hannover is in the Campo Arena http://www.campo-arena.de/sport/kletterlandschaft.html and is good, with lead walls and auto belays. My experience of the rock around is that the Harz was good and the stuff off the motorway on the way to Minden was a bit chossy but ok, with a strange mix of bolts and gear needed.
