I am thinking about a trip to the Lyngen Alps in 2021 and I have read that early-June is a good time to go for alpine climbing with extensive and consolidated snow.
However, I am unsure whether the approaches will require skis or snow shoes. Is anyone able to advise?
I've skied there in May and we were still skiing from the road which means sea-level most days. Many of the most classic ski tours are known to be done year round even if you have to hike up the valley before getting onto the snowfields.
Most likely you won't need skis or snow shoes in early June. The snowline is usually so high you would want to do the approaches in hiking boots or trail running shoes depending how wet the ground is. June can also be a bit variable in terms of weather; cold and rainy has often been a theme at that time of year…..
It can go either way that time of year. Last time I visited at that time of year there was loads of rotten old snow and collapsing cornices around. Not a lot of fun.
