Hi all! I'm a third year medical student and I'm looking to plan my elective for next year (mid-June to mid-July, 4 weeks). I'm really interested in pre-hospital medicine, retrieval medicine, HEMS, etc. I'm also a keen climber/mountaineer and want to be somewhere adventurous (ideally somewhere great for a post-elective expedition, in August). If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! Thanks all

Ysbyty Gwynedd/Bangor in North Wales sounds very much up your street. Take a look here:

That season, Peru might fit your bill.  Dry season, interesting spread of mountaineering objectives; a health system that's not well-developed but also not completely absent; relatively safe if you're sensible.

As Ben B says- midwinter over here and in Australia we don't even have much in the way of mountains. In Melbourne- loads of trauma experience available at 2 very busy major trauma centres- Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Alfred. Not sure how easy to get pre-hospital exposure (I imagine spare seats on the helicopters are rare). RFDS also very active.

Can ask around if you are interested/provide contacts as  I work at both of these hospitals.

Good luck

me and a mate did our elective in Pietermaritzburg S. Africa in a DGH style ED. got heaps of trauma experience. Im sure you could go out with the ambos too. Obv S Africa is a fairly dangerous country but there was loads of good climbing near by and can travel to waterval boven/rocklands if you choose too afterwards. flick me a dm if you want contacts.

It was a while ago now (2017) but I spent my elective in Vancouver and had a great time - I basically did four weeks placement then had a month off which I spent climbing in Squamish, though you'd be well placed to do some more adventurous mountaineering. Not sure re the HEMS/prehospital aspect as that's not my area, but British Columbia is very big with a lot of very remote areas and underserved populations so I imagine there might be opportunities!
