In reply to guywillett: went there a couple of years ago, stunning place. There is a crag on the west coast and some bouldering just to the north, all on very compact Basalt and definitely worthwhile. Up in the mountains at Cilous things take on a wholly different scale with stunnning multi pitch routes again on sold Basalt.
Reccomend getting the guide before going as we wasted a day trying to get this, also whilst you can stay on the coast cheaply via Gites de France, the road up to Cilous is very windy and slow so you really need accomodation up there to make the most of the climbing hereabouts
The walking in the cirques looks pretty amazing and you have to check out the volcano. A note on snorkelling the beaches give easy access but going in off the rocks is proper didgy due to the swell and the reef being only inches under the surface I got pretty badly smashed onto a reef trying to get back in and couldn't walk for a few days.
