Does anybody have any experience of sport climbing close to Imst in Austria? Can you recommend any areas, crags, routes, guidebooks etc? What's the score out there?

Cheers

Iain

Guide wise have a look at the best of genuss guidebooks, although you'll have to brush up on your German.

check out: "Klettern Tyrol", includes both ötztal and imst-region. imst has a nice indoor gym. ötzal is (often hard) bolted sport climbing or bolted multi pitch on perfect gneiss (similar to granite). trad otions for the daring. cracks ötzatl; niederthai, oberied, tumpen, nösslach. (climber paradise site good overview but don`t expect it to be precise)

don`t forget to check out other first class regions in tyrol: zillertal, wilder kaiser, wetterstein etc.

if you want you can contact me, living and climbing around innsbruck (40km west of imst)

cheers-

From Imst for sport climbing you have Ötztal (gneiss) and Nassereith (lime) right next door. Both very well documented on http://climbers-paradise.com

In Otztal I've climbed at Oberried - cute, pleasant enough climbing but laughably short routes - and Nößlach - has some good-looking multipitch routes but they were wet, wasn't that taken with the single pitch stuff. At Nassereith I've only done some of the multipitch routes: very mediocre, the single pitch stuff may be better.

Martinswand near Innsbruck: the sport climbing I've done there was hideously polished and crap, the harder stuff may be better. Some decent-looking multipitch.

Maybe also check out http://bergprofi.com/ for some good-looking multipitch stuff around Ehrwald - slightly further away, about an hour's drive from Imst. Or Leutasch: Chinesische Mauer for sport, bigger mountain routes higher up the hill on the south side of the Wetterstein

Thanks for all of this information. It's not actually for me or a trip for me, but for my friend (non-UKC'er). I'm glad to see that UKC can come through like this. Thanks again.
