Hi Guy,

Four of us are heading out to Wadi Rum in November climbing and would love to hear any feedback on accommodation out there before we look to book.

We have one Arab speaker with us if that helps.

Regards

Dai

When we were there in March we stayed in one of the Bedouin desert camps which we pre-booked. Pros and cons to that:

Pros: away from the relative madness of the village, cool to be out in the desert, campfires in the night etc. Cons: having to take a hilux taxi into town most days as the majority of the climbing is accessed from the village itself. This was included in our accommodation cost but was still a bit faffy.

We enjoyed it very much despite it being a bit like Groundhog Day. Jordan is very much set up for tourism and you’ll see most folk turn up for one, two nights max, so every night we had more or less the same sequence of traditional cooking display, roughly the same food (though always delicious), same songs around the fire and unlimited sweet tea.

All the locals were very friendly and almost daily we got invited to stay at someone’s house in the village. I would say you could probably just turn up and find somewhere if you didn’t want to pre-arrange anything. With an Arabic speaker among you you’ll be the most popular group in the village for sure!

Hope that helps,

Ollie

In Rum village, Bedouin village camp is very good and the owner accommodating of climbers. If you can take the gear, combining this with camping independently in the remote desert for a few nights is a real highlight. It’s usually straightforward to arrange a 4x4 lift plus borrow water cans. Suggestions for this would include Jebel Suewbit or Burdah.

Mamdouh was a really nice host and knew all the climbing locations.

great experience but gets a bit repetitive as previously mentioned.

we then went for accommodation in Wadi Rum for the rest of the week…

It worked well for us as other guests were climbers and great company. We didn’t really scratch the surface with the climbing and I’m looking forward to going back.

I was there over Easter. We stayed at Oryx Hostel when in the village. It was great value for money, had everything we needed. We also did two multi-day stints of wild camping in the Barrah canyon, which I'd 100% recommend. It allowed easy access to some great climbing in an otherworldly setting. The Bedouin can drop you off wherever you want, just make sure you take enough supplies and agree a pick up time. They keep tourists on a tight leash but seem to trust climbers to be capable of looking after themselves.
