Im going out to Chamonix in the next week or so. Im going with a few friends that have some more experience than me.

We are looking at doing some higher stuff, maybe the Cosmiques Arete and the Frendo Spur. I currently have a pair of La Sportiva Nepal Evos and I wear a pair of gaiter with them.

My friends have been telling me that these boots will not be warm enough, that I should get a pair of 'yetti' gaiters and stuff the gaiters with fleece to help insulate the boots.

How right is this advice? Has anyone used these boots in the Alps in the winter? Has anyone had any problems?

I have the older nepal extremes and they're a bit nippy in winter higher up. I tend to use my ski touring boots for climbing high up in winter. Makes it possible to ski out etc too. Failing that there's plenty of other boots designed for alpine winters...

I've not used mine in an alpine winter but I would hazard a guess that they wouldn't be quite warm enough. You'd probably need plastics.

I've used the Nepal Evos for alpine winter stuff - for trips that start and finish in a warm hut they have been fine. So long as they're not too tight and you have some nice thick socks I'd save yourself the pain of buying more boots. There are plenty of shops in Chamonix who will relieve you of a little cash if you want to upgrade after your first outing. Enjoy the Frendo, it's awesome.

I wouldn't go near the Alps in winter without double boots.

In reply to melvin: I have a pair of forty below purple haze over boots in size medium I'm selling. Would definitely upgrade your Nepals for winter Alps stuff. Check them out at needle sports.

Ian.

Ive managed to track down a pair of Berghaus Extreme Yeti Gaiters, had a look at the forty below neoprene gaiters but they dont seem like they would last as long (especially at the price that they are) - thanks anyway though.

Related post for more of the same (just in case you needed any further convincing).

Whatever you decide, have fun and stay safe.
