Note the FCO advise against all travel to Russia at present for obvious reasons. Among other things you won’t get insurance.

Russia should be boycotted imo. There's plenty of other mountains in the world.

Best of luck!!

I did it in 2018 just after the Novochok poisoning and I couldn't wait to get in and out of the country as fast as possible.  Now I don't think I'd visit at all.

Apart from the situation with russia at the moment (no direct flights etc.) it's also worth mentioning that the caucasian counties (Dagestan, Chechnya, ...) have travel warnings already for decades, for good reason...

Skhara from Russia requires to get borderzone permits for Bezengi (bezengi.ru).
This valley is a true gem

Of course, Skhara is a much different game that Elbrus: long, himal style technical route vs. trodden snow plod onto a volcanoe...
To quote George Band, Bezengi is "little himalaya"

No, that's far beyond my level...
I've been in Bezengi years ago and we climbed some of the easier peaks (e.g. Pik Sella, right opposite Shkara). Great fun nevertheless!

The net does not forget... pics are still online:

Ahh sorry I meant Elbrus, not Shkarra.

I was expressing surprise at anyone going to Elbrus atm. It felt dodgy and scary enough in 2018 let alone now.
