Has anyone tried to blag a small van *(Berligo/Partner size) as a 'camper van' on the cross channel ferry at all. If so, any tips? The price difference between a van and a camper van is massive hence the blag.

In reply to airbournegrapefruit: Speaking from experience? Sea France will only accept a camper van if it states this in the log book
In reply to chummer: buy a campervan

In reply to chummer: try norfolk lines dover to dunkurk (sp), they dont seem to care/ bother. i always just pay for a big car for my transporter. as i and others have said before with sea france it depends which way the wind is blowing.

!!! Just looked up the price difference on norfolk line, on a sample quote (ie, what was already in the boxes) it's 4x the price to be a van than it is to be a motorhome of the same size.

On their website it says

"A van is defined as a motor vehicle which has no windows in the rear and is designed for commercial purposes, irrespective of commercial or private use;"

It doesn't really define a motorhome but suggests under 'motorhomes with trailers' that a motorhome should have "windows, sleeping and cooking facilities".

I imagine it varies by company then, I realise it wasn't your intention but thanks for the heads up, I shall have to check terms before booking a ferry in future (mine is registered as a light goods vehicle). I forget that my van isn't really a car sometimes.

In reply to chummer: Thanks for the advice all (except airbournebully) very usefull. So far it's cheaper to go in the chunnel: £129 rtn in the van. They are the only ones who distinguish between a car van and a van van type van..

I always use them. I'm driving an MPV back at the end of the month - one way for 29 quid.

I'm back and forth in a van all the time. Generally use SeaFrance. Just select 'car' and go for it. I've never had so much as a second look. Whatever you do don't select van.
