These were common on Entreprises competition walls in the 90s, but are still a very practical way to create a positive pocket hold without any kind of protuberance. In other words, you get a good handhold, but a less than perfect foothold, just like real rock!
These are not simple to fit: you need to use a hole-cutter electric drill attachment to create the hole in the plywood wall then attach the fitting plates to the rear of the wall. That done, the inset holds themselves fit using an M10 bolt and can be set in four different positions.
Please note: I have more than 30 insets but only 15 fitting plates, though I think it wouldn’t be too hard to Heath Robinson something from wood that would work OK.
