I've been rock climbing for some time now and I'm trying to scrat together kit with a few mates for winter climbing (scottish mixed, alpine etc...).
Found a bargain pair
of oldschool placcy asolo supersofts. The shop assistant seemed to know sod all about them,he reconed they would be crap for mixed, and crap for alpine, and crap in cold conditions.
Which leaves the question:What the hell are they good for then?If anyone owned a pair of these boot before, perhaps they know what they can do,and if they're worth getting (new at 40quid)
Cheers

These boots have a wee bit of a bend but not a lot (but then, so do large sized salomon SM9s. I see no reason you couldn't climb fine in them. They are lovely and warm and well padded.
Shop assistants always assume you will be climbing 3 grades above what you really are & sell you something completely beyond what you need - I've let myself be sold crippling rock boots to up my grade when I am a low grade bumbly.
Assuming you won't be going above III / IV, I would get the boots. They are dirt cheap. If you turn out to be a grade 8 wizard - sell them for what you bought them for and buy something shiny.
And... you might find you don't like snow & ice and want to get rid of them.
If you don't, and they are my size, you could get them for meas a spare pair!

Well I had a pair, nice blue colour, and had no problems with them in either Scotland or the Alps. Pretty sure I used them for everything from long walk ins to grade V. At 40 quid a bargin I'd say.

Nothing wrong with 'em if they fit you - I've had a pair for years. £40 will get you a pair of boots which will be fine in Scotland or the Alps and are stiff enough for a rigid crampon

>I bought a pair of Asolo's as my first pair of mountain boots and after 3 months of solid use in South America had to return them to the shop because they were falling apart. Shop assistant told me they had quite a few problems with Asolo boots. I cant remember the name of the boot though, sorry.

I have had Supersofts for five years - three scottish winters and three alpine summers - and have had no problems. I am going on a (basic) ice course this winter and am going to use them.
£40 sounds a bargain - I paid £180!
