Does anybody on the forum have any knowledge of any research literature or journal articles around any possible relationship between microfibre fleece clothing and asthma? Do you know of anybody who says that microfleece particles cause breathing difficulty for them.

Cheers

Just an opinion, but aren't most microfibre fleece plastic in origin? If so, possibly more the day to day dust caught up in the fibres that trigger an attack?

There are two references on PUBMED http://www.nlm.nih.gov/ that mention a relationship of clothes to asthma. Neither are particularly relevant to your question.

I wonder if the low temperature washing means that protein allergens are not denatured and removed. House dust mite proteins build up in many fabrics, duvets and pillows. Just a thought - you'd be better off asking the British Allergy Foundation http://www.allergyuk.org/ or your doctor.

In reply to SouthernSteve: Thanks Steve, but for the doc its a long, difficult process of investigation.

I have always noticed that the new variety of microfibre fleeces leave a massive amount of 'dust' in the environment, including the car dashboard. It shows up as very minute, fine fibres the same colour as the fleeces in question.

From there its not a huge leap to suspect it as a link with an asthma type breathing problem of late onset. So I am curous to know if anybody else has suspected this link.

In reply to 00spaw: I have my suspicions the very fine fibres that it leaves everywhere (only visible if you look for them, or if the sunlight happens to show them up) is an irritant.

I have removed all my fleeces and wrapped them away in poly bags to see if a few weeks without them alters anything. probably not, but worth a try.
