I have been hearing great things about the mighty Avon SSS in getting rid of the scottish midge. My question is this:

Does it work on the tropical mossie?? Advise please from anyone who has tried this product in SE Asia, Australiashire etc.

Muchos Gracias

I can reliably inform you that despite copious polishing avon has never made my hands "so soft"

In reply to Alison Bond: I'm very pleased at the sudden interest in Avon products for repelling midges. The Forestry Commission local offices in Scotland are buying one particular Avon product in bulk as a potential midge deterrent. It has a good reputation. However, although I did a brief report for some outdoor publications, no-one was interested! The argument was that the hot summer reduced the midge population. This did not affect some of us being badly midged in Skye in September. I contacted Avon and they said the product in question is Skin So Soft. They do not want to market it as a midge repellent because it is a skin softener or conditioner, more precisely "moisturising dry oil body spray" (150ml). Anything that could help to avoid the misery is worth a shot and if the forestry and road construction people in Skye and the north-west highlands are using it, that should be some sort of recommendation?

In reply to peter wood: sorry...just to add for Paul Saunders that the Skye people say the version is "the green one" (!) or Woodland Fresh.

In reply to peter wood:

I really am an Avon lady and there was quite a bit of interest in the stuff at the tail end of last summer, but by the time the new catalogue came through it was winter so they weren't such a bother anymore.

Next spring i'll post a thread setting forth my wares for all those souls not fortunate enough to have access to an Avon lady of their own.

Woodland Fresh variety I beleive. And it's the skin oil rather than any other product. Seems to do something to Peak midges and have also used in hotter climes (European). Funnily enough, never had any major mossy problems when I was in the jungle....

Bugger when applying prior to a climb and then trying to slime one's way up tho'...

OK I read my catalogue...

One poster said it's the skin oil... would that be the "Moisturising Dry Oil Spray"? That's the closest I can find.

Shame it has to be Woodland fresh the Soft and sensual... romantic jasmine rose and ylang ylang sounds more me.

Here in Spain we buy the large bath oil (woodland fresh) SSS and add to water, about 70% water 30 oil. Last longer etc etc and it works fantastic, my mate used it for 20 years in the Tropics.
