Popped into a gooutdoors yesterday and they had a nice looking 9.8 edelrid 70m rope for £99 and was thinking thats a bargain but after seeing staff put them on the shelf and drop them across the floor, anyone bought ropes that dont come sealed up in plastic bags? or am i worrying a little to much about the contamination risk????

You may be worrying too much me thinks. Think about what a rope goes through once it's unleashed in the great outdoors..

In reply to willriseley: That would put me off too. I'm always careful to look after my gear and would hope it has been looked after before I buy it. It may be more of a psychological thing than a real threat to safety? But can you be too careful when you think what's at stake? Although can you expect the staff to care that much? Probably not at Go Outdoors, where they sell a whole load of different stuff, supermarket style, but you'd hope a climbing shop would take more care.

In reply to MattJ753: I doubt that they would have been damaged in any way. Sure just dropping it on the floor wouldnt hurt it when you think its gets thrown over the edge of the crag when your about to ab off it lol, pulled down afer that and falls down from top of climb and all the other abuse it takes lol.

Dont think you can ever be sure what has happend to any peice of kit before you bought it. Im sure it would have been fine as long as it looks intact and new.

In reply to willriseley: im thinking more what its been transported next to and kept next to in the way of diesel/petrol fumes and suchlike? possibly stored with toilet chemicals in the same shop?

In reply to willriseley: Same. I guess the only way to find out is to hang off the end of it.

In reply to willriseley: i'm totally biased here because I used to work for them but I have to defend this point, all the staff may not be as specialist as you find in some places but they aren't as thick as people make out and are very safety conscious with climbing gear.
Think what you like though I doubt these ropes will be left on the shelf.

In reply to willriseley: Lots of ropes don't come in plastic bags and unless the staff regularly dip them in ammonia I wouldn't worry

In reply to willriseley:Unless you caught the staff jumping up and down on batteries while wearing crampons the ropes will be fine.

In reply to gethin_allen: Thanks for that,I have been working for GO 5 years, and can say that, yes we are very health&safety, and all climbing gear is stored very safely, that apply for all climbing gear.It is true that not everybody are climbers, but we train all very often on all topics(I am my self store training coordinator and climber)
In reply to willriseley:

Hahaha. Oh dear! Another pointless thread!!!!

You obviously don't like go outdoors so stop going.

Can't beat go outdoors!!!

Apparently this rope was sold without a flimsy plastic bag on it:

In reply to willriseley: you dont want to climb on my ropes if you are worried about a little dirt of a shop floor

I bought my latest rope from go outdoors, absolute bargain, saved me about £80. I know where I'm going for my next. I'm sure they're sent out in plastic bags then taken out when they go on display. I'm sure the staff putting the ropes on the shelf will do no harm, I'm not convinced they chuck the ropes across the floor either really haha. Much easier to carry it to where you need it

Go outdoors will also beat any other (including online) price by 10%.

In reply to willriseley: I also looked at this rope and thought it was a cracking bargain, until I seen that it only has 5 or 6 UIAA rated falls!!!

It's a skinny single rope, without super materials you have to make a compromise of weight/diameter over life/toughness of the rope.
Anyhow, isn't a UIAA "fall" a factor ~1.7 fall with a 80KG weight (not sure about the length of rope/fall distance or if that really matters) a fall rarely occurs in real life and shouldn't ever happen if you follow good practice guides.

In reply to gethin_allen: I understand that but it is something to take in to account. I looked at getting it for El Chorro late this year so the thought of pushing myself on sport routes will lead to numerous falls and don't fancy spending a hundred quid on a rope that will last 1 trip.
