Do you really need to buy lubricant specific to cams or will WD40 do?

In reply to uberdan:

problem with WD40, so i've been told, is that it attracts dirt, whereas other types of lube don't. There are cheaper alternatives to specific cam lube, but i don't know what. A friend used cooking oil, but i'm not sure I'd recommend it!

In reply to uberdan: i used wd40 just dont get it on slings etc it will rot the fabric.

In reply to uberdan:
Try getting some GT85 from a motor bike shop
It's a silicon based lubricant that we used to use for bearings when I was kart racing.
Not cheap, but really good stuff

Drip a bit of olive oil off your tin of sardines on them, that should do. Seriously, I did it to a sticky krab yesterday.

In reply to uberdan:

do you even need to lube your cams? I've never done anything to mine and they are still working nice and smoothly

I think its just selling you something you dont really need, I mean what did people do before cam lube was on sale!

If you climb on sea cliffs regularly they can stiffen up from the salt water and sand.

In reply to uberdan:

WD 40 isn't a lubricant.

WD = Water Dispersant.

It won't do any harm to your cams but GT85 or a similar light lubricant would be better

They bought good quality Cycle lubes, just the same as they do now. The metolius cam lube is a well-known bike chain lube, re-branded.

WD-40 is the bees leg joints for freeing up a stuck cam but is not a great long-term lubricant. I use one then the other if it's bad.

In reply to sutty: Can recommennd you don't do the whole olive oil thing - its fine for a while then it hardens up and gets crusty and really really sticky. I had to then resort to spit to help re moisten the olive oil every time I used them.

LOL, used all sorts of things wrongly in emergency. Most oils will solidify if frozen enough, is that how yours set?

Which one, and is it cheaper to buy as chain lube?

In reply to pottsworth: Finish line, I think teflon plus from memory, but might be something different?
 beardy mike 13 May 2007
In reply to sutty: Don't know but I ended up WDing them to get rid of the oil (or the worst of it)... and just kept up the spit thing I did buy some of the metolius stuff at one point but its long lost at the bottom of a pile of climbing gear...

I used to use 3 in 1 but recently found some silicon lube that sprays on like WD, is a little thicker and stays put. It was tough to get off my hands, too!

In reply to uberdan:

I've always used WD40 without any problem. Best to wipe off the excess with a bit of kithen roll after working the mechanism a few times.
