Does anyone know where large crampons can be purchased?

In reply to Helpful mum:

Go buy some normal non-rigid crampons, and then go buy an extra long bar for them.
You can get them in Needlesports.

http://www.needlesports.com/acatalog/Mail_Order_Crampons_32.html

Look at the bottom of the page.

I found my standard G12s fitted sixe 11.5 boots without much trouble so maybe take your boots with you when you buy the crampons.

In reply to Helpful mum: Grivel G12 with the extra extension bar fits Scarpa Vega HA size 12.5 (the plastic boot on Vegas are whole sizes so its a 13 - the inner only is in half sizes) The G12 will not fit a size 13 without the extension bar. Cheapest price I found was at Theoutdoorshop.com the G12 is £75 and the extension bar £9.99

In reply to Helpful mum: aaaah, the old yeti problem! i use camp ice invaders with 13 vegas and they are plenty long enough. i think they have been superceded by ice runner or something, but seems to use the exact same frame.

on a similar subject - where can you get leather boots for mixed climbing in uk13?? most brands go up to 48s which seem to small. tried kaylands in 13 but again, dont seem as roomy as vegas

In reply to abcdef:

sportiva yellow things (nepal somethings?) are available in 48 which I think is 13 and have a roomy fit I find, as I have got a pair. Scarpa Cumbre are also available in 13, and these should be built to the same foot shape as vegas. Last time I checked, Vegas and Cumbre were both made up to 48.

I found most shops will make you buy them before trying them on, but snow and rock in covent garden, and peglers in arundel were the only ones down south which where the would order them and I could try them out without paying £200. These shops could both get the scarpas and the sportivas

I think that Meindl are probably the roomiest of all, I have a pair of walking boots by them. I have heard they make them up to 14, though not sure that this is true. I think that Peglers can get Meindl, and the other german boots Raichle(?) so might be worth a try. Not sure if any of these boots are particularly technical though.

I always look with envy at people trying on boots in a shop wandering if they should have a larger size or not. If you have big feet you spend months trying to find somewhere with the boots and then you get to the shop and try on the size 48 and wander whether they will be okay.

another vote for G12 with extension bar, they fit fine on my size 48 (ie 13 1/4) sportiva mountaineering boots. I would have thought that any shop stocking grivel products would be able to order the extension bars for you, though they may not be aware of this product. As someone else says you can order them on the internet from needlesports.com.

In reply to Henry: Agree with every word youve written here Henry. Each manufacturer has a different 'fit'so the sizes mean nothing compared to your street shoe size, and its a bind having to fork out £200ish to find you are crippled coming downhill after a footbashing day

In reply to Henry: if only it were that easy! vegas come in old skool size 13 which fit (i take 12 in shoes) but cumbraes and the like are 48's which i guess is nearer to 12.5 since they dont fit. same with sportivas. salomon are pretty hopeless since they dont think there are any size 13 in the country. meindl have nothing near suitable on their website, raichle have a model i have tried but its almost as heavy as a vega and pretty expensive. millet had some good looking boots on their site but the most technical were only made up to 12.5. oh well, i guess i should be grateful that i'm saving money.

In reply to abcdef: Just wondering if the high alt vegas have a bigger shell than the ordinary model, might be an option any idea?
m0unt41n 03 Feb 2006
In reply to dek: The HA vegas use the same plastic outer boot, its a different inner, uses closed cell foam. The plastics are whole sizes, my HA 12.5 have size 13 plastic outer boot and 12.5 size inner. The inner for the ordinary Vegas are softer than the inners of the HA's I've just bought.

I also tried out the new Omegas but they have less volume, only do whole sizes, and I could only find size 12.

In reply to ian2u: Thanks for that Ian, will give them a try. Yes, know what you mean about the Omegas, perfect boot and as light as a walking boot, if the buggers were a wee bit bigger?!

In reply to Henry: Thanks for your response Henry. The consensus is to go for G12 with extension bar.

Thanks for the reply but the boots are size 13 (but measure 11.5 cms across the sole). The consensus seems to be to go for G12s with an extension bar.

The Omega is made up to size 13 though. The reason that there are no half sizes is that the inner needs to be heat fitted to fit properly. The difference this makes to the fit is quite pronounced.

In reply to Stephen Reid: Are you sure about that? USA 13=UK12 The website last time i looked only went to a UK 12.

In reply to Helpful mum: I'm only size 11(UK) but have had problems finding suitable semi-step (heel clip & toe strap) crampons for Scarpa Mantas. I tried everything in Cotswold except BD new crampon (Sabre?) which was not in stock.
